  1. Sking is a self-propulsion on snow by means 
  2. of elongated runners (skis) for the feet, 
  3. slightly bent upward at the tip. It is a 
  4. popular recreational sport, as cross-country 
  5. ski touring or as downhill runs on mountain 
  6. trails. Skiing was known as a means of 
  7. transportation across snow in North Europe 
  8. and Asia from about 3000 BC, but developed 
  9. into a sport when innovations in ski design 
  10. made it possible to manoeuvre more 
  11. accurately, around 1896.
